Position Description

 

 

Department:  Laboratories International for Microbiology Studies (LIMS)

 

Job Title:        Molecular Biologist

 

Reports to:     Associate Laboratory Director

 

Purpose of Position:

The Molecular Biologist is responsible for conducting those aspects of studies undertaken by IHMA that require molecular diagnostics.  These responsibilities include writing protocols, procuring necessary supplies and equipment, conducting testing, training other employees as needed, routinely updating management on project status, summarizing results, writing reports for clients, and publishing study data as appropriate.  Furthermore, the Molecular Biologist will remain abreast of technical developments in the field of molecular microbiology and will make recommendations about acquisition of new technologies deemed beneficial to IHMA’s competitive position in the industry.

 

Typical Duties:

1.     Perform accurate and precise testing according to established procedures in microbiology.  Testing to include PCR, RT-PCR, PFGE, SDS-PAGE, and other technologies.

2.     Verify and analyze results using techniques and principles described in approved procedures, including use of computer programs such as SeqScape v. 7.0.

3.     Assess plausibility of results based on all pertinent factors.

4.     Perform necessary quality control procedures, properly evaluate control data, and implement and document corrective action as needed.

5.     Write up study results as required by contracts with clients.

6.     Write scientific reports (abstracts, posters, and full-length manuscripts) as required by contracts with clients or at the request of management.

7.     Operate, calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot all instrumentation and equipment used in performance of job duties.

8.     Organize work according to laboratory priorities and completing assigned responsibilities with little supervision.

9.     Assist other department employees as necessary.

10.  Communicate with supervisor and/or co-workers in a timely manner when any problems arise.

11.  Train other employees as required.

12.  Review pertinent microbiology literature, particularly that regarding molecular biology and its application regarding antimicrobial susceptibility and resistance.

13.  Make recommendations regarding new technologies that would enhance IHMA’s competitive position in the field of molecular diagnostics.

 

Education requirements:

Master’s degree or Ph.D.

 

Experience requirements:

Experience in molecular biology in a clinical microbiology or research laboratory
